this came on my iTunes radio yesterday (yes, I listen to iTunes radio…not entirely sure why…shut up!) and I haven’t been able to get it out of my head. the amazing visuals (aka video - post-Beyoncé, can we just call good videos “visuals”? okbythanx) don’t help in quashing my obsession.

…and i think it’s because beyonce is a fucking boss.

i mean, really, think about it. there are a number of media reports on the incredible control she wields over her own image and her inhuman work ethic. she’s spent four solo albums, years in destiny’s child, and numerous tours demonstrating that she’s a talented and bankable pop icon. and, of course, in all of those outings, she’s put herself out there as an attractive and sexually desirable woman, but nothing to the extent of her contemporaries (and i use that word literally, to mean those female artists putting out music in/around the same time as her, and not to suggest that there are any female pop artists on her level) and NOTHING to the extent of this album. but i think this album is a beautiful, incredible thing. first, the music is really good, her voice is incredible, as usual, and she looks fantastic - FANTASTIC (can “touring” be the newest fitness craze, please?). but in listening and watching it all, there was no way that i could forget that she is in control. she runs this album - she runs the music and all of the visuals. and you can’t be exploited when you’re in control.

third, i’ve been thinking a lot about why the strong sexuality of the album and accompanying videos don’t go the way of “exploitative” the way a lot of people have characterized the music and videos of other pop “stars” like rihanna and miley this year (as in, “poor them, they’re just doing this because women are taught to wear their sexuality on their sleeves in order to satisfy men, and are not expressing it for their own pleasure,” etc.)….

second thing: there will be a RUN on lingerie in the coming weeks.  i can say that because i’m pretty sure i’m going to be one of those people buying lingerie thinking it’ll make me look like beyonce.

there are so many things i want to say about this album. the simplest, and most understated, is to say that i’m not mad i paid for it.

I realized recently that I’ve been listening to the same dumb* 25 or so songs for the past 6 months so, in an effort to mix it up and refamiliarize myself with the other music I own, but never listen to, I’m going to have “Genius Playlists of the Week.” That means that every Sunday, I’ll pick a few random songs and have iTunes create Genius playlists of 25 songs that will then play me through the week. Not only will it add some variety to my commute, but it will also probably reignite my love for music.

This week’s Genius Playlists are based on the following songs:

  • Brooklyn (Go Hard), Jay-Z
  • Do Ya Thang, Rihanna
  • The Great Fire, Future slands
  • Video Games, Lana Del Rey
  • I Can’t Go For That, The Bird and The Bee

Let’s see what happens…

*they’re not actually dumb, I’m just dumb for never changing the songs on my iphone…

as if i needed any more convincing that the desert is where it’s at…

yup…6 months from now. i’m thinking about it as an investment in my future happiness.

If I have to do work, there’s no better setting than sitting outside in 80 degree weather and listening to a 90’s-00’s R&B station on pandora (“Drunk on Love” Radio, to be precise).
